Metro turns up heat on paint-can vandals with thermal-imaging drones

Drones and helicopters will swoop on Victoria’s railways to spot vandals and trespassers as more people take to the trains in the lead up to Saturday’s grand final. The drones, which are equipped with cameras and thermal imaging devices, will be deployed on specific sections of the network to respond to incidents. Data will be fed back to Metro’s control centre and passed on to police. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said “the latest technology” would be used to identify problems quickly and keep the network moving during major events. “This eye-in-the-sky technology is making sure that we can see what is going on across the network to both get on top of issues like new graffiti … and it’s also about making sure that we’re keeping our network safe,” she said.
